Women First Featured on Cover with FIFA 16

This year will be the first year that EA Sports adds women soccer players to the FIFA-licensed title, and women’s soccer (or football) stars have shattered the gender barrier in sports and videogames by finally being allowed to grace the cover of EA’s massively-popular FIFA game.

Three Portland Thorns’ players will be among the first female athletes to grace the cover of the EA Sports video game FIFA 16 when the game is released in the fall.

Forward Alex Morgan will appear on the U.S. regional cover. Forward Christine Sinclair and defender Stephanie Catley will be on covers in their home countries of Canada and Australia. The women will appear alongside FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who will be on the world wide cover.

Since launching in 1993, EA Sports’s FIFA title has grown into one of the world’s best-selling video games. Giving Morgan co-equal billing with previous male cover men such as Messi, Wayne Rooney and Ronaldinho is an important step for the sport.

International female soccer stars make peanuts compared to their male counterparts. For example, Messi annually pulls in around $80 million from salary and endorsements compared to $3 million or so for Morgan.

When the game is released in September, it will include women’s players for the first time in the game’s history. The game will have 12 national teams which include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden and the U.S.
